Summary

The United States Marine Corps War Memorial, in Arlington County, Virginia, frequently referred to as the Iwo Jima Memorial, depicts one of the most famous incidents of World War II. The monument is in tribute to the 6,821 Americans who gave their lives in the battle for Iwo Jima, Japan—a key to the successful conclusion of the Pacific campaign. The sculpture is the largest cast-bronze statue in the world; hundreds of artisans worked eight years to complete it.
