Legend of St Francis: 19. Stigmatization of St Francis 1297-1300 Fresco, 270 x 230 cm Upper Church, San Francesco, Assisi

This is the nineteenth of the twenty-eight scenes (twenty-five of which were painted by Giotto) of Legend of Saint Francis.

The four scenes in the first bay of the left wall deal with the last events in the saint's life, and are among the most fascinating in the cycle.

In the Stigmatization of St Francis, the rocks take on an almost phosphorescent luminosity on what is the darkest wall in the church.
