In the summer of 1901, Nicholas returned to St. Petersburg and in October married Helena Ivanovna Shaposhnikova. Helena was an accomplished pianist and came to be regarded as a distinguished lady of letters and a prolific writer in the esoteric tradition of Eastern religion. She was his [[twin flame]], an inspiration and support to Nicholas throughout his life. Nicholas and Helena had two sons, George and Svetoslav.
