Zion appears in the Old Testament as the name of a Jebusite city conquered by King David.[1] Thereafter, the City of David was known as Mount Zion. When Solomon’s Temple was later erected on the upper part of the same hill, Mount Zion came to refer to that site.

With the destruction of Jerusalem and the Babylonian captivity, historical memory of the site of David’s city was lost, and a hill on the other side of the valley was assumed to be its original location and is known today as Mount Zion. It is said that the Mother Mary kept the flame of the Mother on behalf of earth’s evolutions on Mount Zion in a house overlooking the city and the temple, the Cedron Valley, and the Mount of Olives. There in the upper chamber that became the gathering place of the disciples and where the first Christian church was established, Mary served the Logos during her final years of glory. It is in this place that Christians guard the memory of the dormition, or “falling asleep,” of the Blessed Mother.[2]

The New Jerusalem

In the New Testament, Mount Zion (or Mount Sion) is used as a name for the New Jerusalem.

But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.[3]

And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.[4]

Esoteric meaning

Archangel Gabriel explains the mystical meaning of the term:

And so when David wrote the Word of the LORD “Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion,” he understood that the Christ Self of each individual son and daughter of God always sits on the right hand of God, on the mount of attainment, the holy hill of the Higher Consciousness of Zion. And here the mystical interpretation of the word Zion is I AM THAT I AM, or the individual I AM Presence.[5]

Therefore, Mount Zion can be understood as “the mount of the I AM Presence.”[6]

Sanat Kumara gives the following explanation of the inner meaning of Zion:

As the saints one by one realize that I AM WHERE I AM, that they dwell in me and I in them wherever they are in Spirit and in Matter, the upper and the lower spheres of the figure eight begin to converge. This ultimate convergence of the spheres is finally completed through the Z-ray initiations of the ion (Zion). These are the initiations given by the Lamb to the archetypal ‘144,000’, who follow him whithersoever he goeth and are therefore with him on the mount (the apex of attainment) ‘Zion’.

The four letters of the word indicate the four cardinal points of cosmic consciousness ensouled by the ‘Lion’, the ‘Calf’, the ‘Man’ and the ‘Eagle’. Zion, therefore, is a state of consciousness which the Beloved in due course transfers to his beloved. Coincidentally it may be a geographical location. Always it is the place where the eternal Lamb and the embodied Lamb are one with their chelas in the cosmic interchange: Drink me while I AM drinking thee.[7]
