mahatma' [úr sanskrít maha, sem þýðir „mikill,“ og atman, sem þýðir „sál“] er „mikil sál“; einstaklingur sem, af auðmjúku samfélagi sínu við lífsins loga, hefur dregið fram og tekið sem sína eigin sjálfsmynd hina miklu sólarvitund um vitund Guðs.
