In 1912 she graduated from the Lutheran Hospital Nursing School in St. Louis, Missouri. At this occasion she took her class motto, “Ich Dien” (I Serve), as the guiding principle of her life. Clara Louise quickly advanced to responsible positions, becoming assistant director and then director of schools of nursing.
