Una melodía breve y sencilla que se caracteriza especialmente por notas individuales con las que se entona un número indefinido de sílabas, que se usa para cantar los salmos, cánticos, etc., en los servicios religiosos.

Tanto en Oriente como en Occidente el nombre de Dios se salmodia repetidamente en el ritual de expiación, en el cual el alma del hombre se une con el Espíritu de Dios al entonar el sonido de Su nombre. En sánscrito es AUM o AUM TAT SAT AUM y en inglés I AM THAT I AM (YO SOY EL QUE YO SOY).

By sounding the name of God or that of a member of the heavenly hosts, the vibration of the being is simulated and thereby Being itself is drawn to the one chanting. Therefore chants, when properly used, magnetize the Presence, whether universal or individualized, of the Divine Consciousness.
